Description
Students learn how to identify multiple allele and polygenic traits, and how to use them in punnett squares, with this NO PREP digital interactive Google Slide genetics lesson.
Slides are designed to be completed by students (as individuals or in pairs!). Information on Google Slides is interactive, with drag and drop elements that keep students engaged in learning. Slides guide students through concepts step-by-step using drag-and-drop practice, visual learning, and built-in critical thinking, completing guided student notes as they go.
No direct instruction needed! You are free to move around the classroom to check on and help students one-on-one!
This resource can be used as a stand-alone lesson to teach multiple allele and polygenic traits, or a comprehensive reinforcement after an introduction to the concepts.
Twenty-nine Interactive Google Slides walk students through learning step-by-step:
- First, a review of Mendelian genetics, incomplete and co-dominant traits (students are expected to already be familiar with these inheritance patterns so they can be compared with multiple allele and polygenic inheritance patterns)
- Next, the slides introduce students to multiple allele traits, using the examples of petunias and human blood type
- Students learn how to identify blood type by the genotype, phenotype, and visually observing the presence or absence of A and B proteins on red blood cells
- Students then practice completing punnett squares with ABO blood types
- Then, they learn about polygenic inheritance, using the example of skin tone
- They learn that skin tone is a result of 6 different genes, leading to an incredible variety of genotypes and phenotypes
- Students are challenged to complete a dihybrid cross of two parents with medium skin tone, and explore the percent chances of the couple having medium, light, and dark skin tone children
Slides are image focused
No walls of text! Slides invite students to drag and drop elements, sort, and label as they guide understanding. Kids learn genetics through experience and engagement.
Students complete the provided Student Notes sheet while working through the slides. Everything they need for their notes is on the Google Slide set – no direct instruction required! This frees you up to move around the room and help students who need it.
Teaching Guide includes a fun, simple, low-pre activity that reinforces the idea of polygenic traits and how the trait distribution makes a bell curve!
