Three Forensic Footwear Impression activities give your students a chance to practice their skills! Two digital and one hands on. Students measure impressions and calculate height, match footwear impressions to the sole pattern that made it, and make their own impression and cast!
Three Footwear Impression Activities:
Calculate Height:
Interactive Google Slides with ten total questions.
Five slides give students a footwear impression. They use the digital ruler to measure the impression length, and then estimate the suspect’s height with the provided formula.
The next five slides give students a set of prints, where they use the stride length to estimate height.
All questions come with a short crime scene story (for added interest!) and three suspects of different heights. Students choose the suspect(s) that fall within the height range of the impression!
Student independent activity: Instructions are provided on the slides!
Full KEY included!
Identify Footwear Impressions:
Interactive Google Slides with twenty total questions.
Students are presented with 3D impressions, 2D impressions, and casts made of impressions.
They compare the impressions to a set of shoe sole images, looking for a match (just like CSI!)
Some impressions do not have a match, while some suspects were at multiple crime scenes!
Student independent activity: Instructions are provided on the slides!
Full KEY included!
Hands On Activity:
Template for Class Shoe Sole Database: Students make their own Shoe Database (like the Footwear Databases used by CSI) by taking photos of their shoes and adding them to the provided Google Slide template.
Template for Footwear Impressions Evidence Photos: Students make a 3D impression in dirt and photograph it as Evidence. The photos are put into the Evidence Google Slide template. Now students can compare the Evidence photos with the Database they made and find the match! Matches are recorded on the provided evidence record sheet.
Full, detailed instructions for making plaster casts of student’s footwear impressions! Evidence Labels included!
Detailed Teaching Guide included tips for how to do the hands on activity (most of it) even with virtual students.
My Forensics students thought this was an excellent intro activity into Shoe Impressions. They had a great time working with the digital interactive. – Kristin W. March 4, 2022
My students were engaged and learned from the googleslides portion of the lesson, then were very engaged in making their own shoe impressions and class shoe database. This lesson was a lot of fun! – Melissa R. February 17, 2022
This was a GREAT VALUE!!!!! There are 2 activities where students are active. The “assessment” whether you want to have a quiz or really good practice had 21 impressions to match to footwear. Most products don’t offer enough practice. This was presented in google slides so it could easily be assigned in a distance setting. The 2 activities could be used in a distance setting if kids have a way to take a picture (cell phone anyone?) – Melissa J. April 13, 2021
